User Reviews forOSCEs for the MRCS Part B: A Bailey & Love Revision Guide, Second Edition pdf
This is a good book, but there are just so many areas that it could improve.
The organisation of chapters feels haphazard at best, struggling to follow themes in surgery and possible OSCE stations.
Given this is a second edition and only recently published compared to some study guides, there are large portions of the information that is outdated or simply incorrect. A good example is insulin management for fasting patients which states they shouldn't receive any of their normal insulin, when they should have long acting insulin if on a basal bolus regimen. Other frustrating elements include description of surgical site infection management and types of clean/dirty wound, the NICE guidance document is a more accessible read, easier to understand in relation to practice, and free.
In essence, get the book from the hospital library, or a cheap online rental service, or borrow from a friend or senior. Don't pay over £30 then use this as your only guide to the MRCS.
Had to edit this because I keep reading more and finding worse sections. In IV fluid resus situations it recommends dextrose, followed by colloid infusions. Neither of these are practiced for years, with many trusts refusing to stock colloids because of transfusion reactions and lack of evidence.
Don't buy this book, get a list of the contents and google it for better advice.
